Frequently Asked Questions...
I've never been to counselling before. What should I expect?

There are many assumptions that people make about counselling and the truth is that every counsellor is different so you won't get the same experience every time.

What it SHOULD be is a relaxed comfortable place where you can talk about anything that is bothering you, no matter how big or small.

Let's dispel some myths to reassure you:

  • You DON'T need to have a mental health diagnosis; everyone is welcome

  • A counsellor isn't there to give you advice but to help you make your own decisions

  • You don't have to lay on a chaise lounge posing like Ricky Gervais while I take notes!

Our connection will begin with a free 30 minute phone or video chat to ask some basic questions to ensure I am the right fit for you and that I am able to support you effectively. I will always be honest if I feel you would benefit from a referral to a different professional but I would discuss this with you openly.

If you're happy to go ahead, we begin with 6 sessions (either face to face or remote) which are 50 minutes long and usually take place on a weekly basis.  Towards the end of the 6 sessions we can discuss whether you feel you would like further counselling.

What type of issues do you support?

You're free to talk about anything that's troubling you but I am trained to support a variety of issues including:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Grief/Loss

  • Self-esteem

  • Addiction

  • Physical/emotional abuse

  • Eating disorders

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • EUPD/BPD (Personality Disorders)

  • Anger management

  • ADHD

  • Hoarding

  • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

I may provide referrals to a specialist in cases that are beyond my expertise but ALWAYS with your permission.

Counselling has never helped me before. Why should I try again?

Just like no doctor or teacher is the same, the same goes for therapists.  If you've had a previous bad experience of counselling I would encourage you to bring this into the open (without expecting you to name names!)  It's really helpful if I'm aware of what didn't work for you so I can be sensitive to this and hopefully gain your trust over time.

Do you offer remote counselling services e.g. video or telephone?

Yes I'm happy to carry out sessions over the telephone or via video call. The only requirement for this is that you're able to talk in a private place without interruption and that you have a good phone/wifi connection.

How many sessions do I need?

I always recommend around 6-10 sessions to start with. You may feel you don't need any more than this but that's usually a decision to be made as we go along. The power is in your hands so if you feel ready to end therapy, it's probably a good sign that you're feeling more confident in yourself and ready to 'go it alone'.

How do I pay for sessions?

BACS transfer at the beginning or end of each weekly session (or up front for 6 sessions if you'd prefer) is usually the easiest way but I'm happy to discuss other options e.g. standing order, Paypal etc.
